Most of the data was compiled by the Environmental Protection Agency. Additional data was obtained from state and local officials or from official documents related to an enforcement action.
The plants included in the database are publicly owned and have a treatment capacity of at least 1 million gallons per day. These plants receive more scrutiny from regulators than smaller ones.
The data may contain abbreviations, misspelled words and regulatory jargon. We have tried to make the information clearer where possible.
Many of the sewage treatment plants were not the target of a fine or any other type of enforcement action. In other cases, a plant may have entered into a settlement agreement to correct a violation, but details were not available. In some instances, fines or enforcement actions are associated with a sewage treatment plant even though violations occurred in sewer lines upstream from the plant.
